Stories from the Woodshop

Welcome to my little corner of the shop! Every cart I build starts with a real person, a real business and usually a phone call full of big ideas. This is where I’ll share the stories behind those carts: the clients who dream them up, the details we figure out together and the moment each one rolls out the door ready to go to work. You’ll find client spotlights, monthly roundups and a peek behind the sawdust at how a Woodshop Joy cart comes to life. Grab a coffee and stay a while.

You Bring the Dream. I'll Help You Build It.

· By Laura

Starting a business is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. There are so many decisions to make, details to figure out, and questions you might not even know to ask yet.

That's where I come in!

At Woodshop Joy, I believe building your cart should be one of the most exciting parts of starting your business. And my job goes far beyond building beautiful, functional carts.

Experience Makes a Difference

For the past two years, I've focused on one thing: designing and building custom collapsible carts.

Not furniture. Not cabinets. Just carts.

And after building more than 100 of them, I've learned a thing or two about what works, what doesn't, and all those little details that make a difference when you're running a business.

Every cart I build benefits from the experience of the ones that came before it. And every client benefits from the knowledge, attention to detail, and personal customer support that come with that experience.

More Than Just a Cart

For many of my clients, navigating health department requirements is one of the biggest challenges. I've spent countless hours researching regulations, communicating with health departments, and developing portable plumbing systems. I've even traveled to attend a client's health inspection, both to make sure everything worked properly and to offer a little moral support!

But my support doesn't stop there.

Whether you're just beginning to explore a business idea or already have a detailed vision, I'm happy to share what I've learned from working with so many other small business owners.

And when your business gets up and running? I'll be one of your biggest cheerleaders!

I absolutely love seeing my clients succeed, sharing their businesses through social media spotlights, and celebrating their milestones. Our relationship doesn't end when you pick up your cart.

So, What's Stopping You?

The design? The budget? The health department requirements? Or maybe you're just not sure where to begin.

Whatever it is, let's talk about it!

I offer free design consultations, flexible installment payments, and financing options to help make getting started a little easier.

More importantly, I offer experience, personal attention, and a genuine commitment to helping your business succeed.

You bring the dream. I'll help you build it.

And I'll be cheering you on every step of the way.

Client Spotlight: Riva’s Journey to a Coffee Cart That Works for Her

· By Laura

Sometimes, the best cart design starts with a cart you already own.

When Riva found Woodshop Joy, she already had a beautiful coffee cart. What she didn’t have was a setup that was as user-friendly and easy to transport as she needed it to be. The cart was heavy and cumbersome to fold and move, especially when she needed to handle everything on her own.

After finding my page, Riva reached out, and we started with what she already had.

Starting With What Wasn’t Working

Riva brought her existing cart to my workshop, and we spent time looking at ways to improve its usability. One of the biggest challenges was transportation. Rather than having a cart that folded into one heavy, awkward piece, we explored the idea of making it fully collapsible.

With my collapsible cart design, each piece is separate, making it easier to lift, stack, and load into the back of a vehicle. Instead of wrestling with a bulky cart, Riva could have individual components that are much more manageable for one person to transport and set up.

It was a great starting point, but as we talked through her business and how she wanted to work, something else became clear.

When One Idea Leads to Another

As we brainstormed possibilities, Riva realized that a completely new cart might actually be a better fit for her business model.

And that’s one of my favorite things about the design process. Sometimes, you start with one idea and discover something even better along the way.

We began designing a brand-new cart tailored to Riva’s workflow, her aesthetic, and the experience she wants to create for her customers. She has a real appreciation for attention to detail, and she wanted her cart to reflect the same high level of quality and service that she brings to her own business.

That meant thinking beyond how the cart would look. We also considered how it would function, how easily she could transport it, and how each element would support her day-to-day operations.

The goal was to create something that looked beautiful while making her work easier.

Making the Most of What She Already Had

Even though we decided a brand-new cart would be the best fit for Riva's business moving forward, I still wanted her original cart to work better for her. I went ahead and made some modifications to improve its usability, giving her a setup that better suited her needs while we worked on designing her new cart.

For me, that's part of what makes this process so rewarding. It's not just about building something new. It's about listening, finding solutions, and helping each client make the most of their setup. Every business has different needs, and I love being able to work through those details together.

Why Experience Matters in the Design Process

One of the benefits of having owned or worked with multiple carts is that you begin to understand what you like, what you don't, and what works best for your particular flow. Every event, setup, and business is different, and those experiences can help you make better decisions about your next cart.

This is also where my experience comes in. Having built close to 150 carts, I've had the opportunity to explore a wide variety of layouts, features, finishes, and configurations. I can help clients consider options they may not have thought about and talk through the practical details that make a real difference once they're out working.

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. A cart should be designed around the person using it, the business they're building, and the experience they want to provide.

That's why I love collaborating with clients like Riva. The design process is about more than choosing colors and adding features. It's about listening, asking questions, sharing ideas, and working together to create something that feels right for that individual business.

Bringing Riva's Vision to Life

Working with Riva was a wonderful reminder that designing a custom cart is a journey. Sometimes, improving what you already have is the answer. Other times, a conversation opens the door to a completely new possibility.

I'm so glad Riva reached out to Woodshop Joy and that we had the opportunity to explore what would work best for her. I can't wait to see her new coffee cart out in the world, supporting her business and making her work a little easier along the way.

Dreaming about a cart for your own business?

Whether you're starting from scratch, looking to improve an existing setup, or simply trying to figure out what would work best for your business, I'd love to help you explore the possibilities.

At Woodshop Joy, every cart begins with a conversation. Reach out by direct message or through my website to schedule a free design consultation.

Bringing Common Cup Coffee to Life: A Big Milestone for Woodshop Joy

· By Laura

Some projects are about more than building a cart. They’re about helping someone take a dream and turn it into something real. Kayleigh’s Common Cup Coffee project was exactly that, and I’m so excited to share this milestone!

Meet Kayleigh of Common Cup Coffee

Based in Columbus, Ohio, Kayleigh started Common Cup Coffee with a desire to bring people together. For her, coffee is about so much more than what’s in the cup. It’s about creating a welcoming, safe space where people can connect, build relationships, and find community.

After graduating from The Ohio State University in 2025 with a degree in English literature, Kayleigh began turning her dream of owning a business into reality. Common Cup is her way of serving the Columbus community while creating the kind of space where people feel welcome and connected.

I love the heart behind her business, and I’m honored that she chose Woodshop Joy to help bring her vision to life.

Building a Fully Plumbed Coffee Cart

Kayleigh’s cart was a special project for Woodshop Joy because it marked a new chapter in what I can offer my clients. Along with designing and building the cart itself, I took on the challenge of incorporating a complete plumbing system to meet the requirements for a mobile coffee business.

This meant working through the details of the sinks, water supply, hot water, wastewater, and plumbing components to create a functional setup that would work within the cart’s design.

There was a lot to learn along the way, and I wanted to be sure everything worked properly before Kayleigh began serving customers. That brought us to one of the most important steps in the process: the health department inspection.

A Trip to Columbus and a Big Day

I traveled to Columbus to be there for Kayleigh’s inspection. I wanted to see the cart in action, test the plumbing system, and help work through any questions that came up during the process.

And the result? We passed!

Seeing the finished cart operate as intended and knowing it had passed inspection was such a rewarding moment. This project pushed me to learn new things, solve problems, and expand my knowledge of what it takes to build a mobile coffee cart with integrated plumbing.

Every project teaches me something, but this one was especially meaningful. It represents a new opportunity for Woodshop Joy to support aspiring coffee business owners in a bigger way.

Health department requirements can vary by location, so I always encourage anyone considering a mobile coffee business to start those conversations early. Planning for the equipment and plumbing requirements from the beginning can make a big difference in the design process.

Thank You, Kayleigh!

Kayleigh, thank you for trusting me with your vision and for being so patient and encouraging throughout this learning process. Taking on something new always comes with challenges, and I’m grateful you trusted me to work through them with you.

I’m so excited to see Common Cup Coffee grow and to imagine all the conversations, connections, and cups of coffee that will happen around your cart. Congratulations on this huge milestone! I’m cheering you on every step of the way.

Bringing Creativity and Play to Bambinos Play Cafe

· By Laura

Some projects are extra fun because you know they’ll bring smiles, creativity, and a little messy fun! This custom slime cart for Laura and Bambinos Play Cafe was such a joy to design.

A New Chapter for Bambinos

Laura and her husband, Rabee, recently opened Bambinos Play Cafe, formerly known as Agape, with a fresh vision for creating a welcoming space where children can play, explore, and make wonderful memories with their families.

The name Bambinos has special meaning to Laura, connecting to her existing daycare business near Hall Road and Romeo Plank.

Their vision includes a soft play area, games and activities, scheduled craft days, birthday parties, bounce house options, and a café with kid-friendly snacks, breakfast options, ice cream, and sweet treats.

And one of the most exciting additions? A slime cart available every day!

A Custom Cart for Creative Fun

Designing a cart for a children's play cafe was such a fun opportunity to create something a little different. This custom slime cart was designed to complement Bambinos' playful atmosphere and give little ones another opportunity for hands-on creativity.

I love working with business owners who have a vision for something special and helping turn their ideas into something tangible. Every business has its own personality, and custom carts can be designed to fit so many different needs!

I'm so excited for Laura and Rabee as they grow Bambinos and create a place where families can play, celebrate, and make lasting memories together.

Mobile Cart Maintenance & Repair

· By Laura · Video by Riley

I Love It When Old Friends Come to Visit

One of my favorite things about building custom carts is knowing that the relationship doesn’t end when a cart leaves the Woodshop Joy shop.

I love when carts I’ve built over the years come back for a little TLC. These carts have become part of the Woodshop Joy family, so seeing them again feels a little like welcoming an old friend home.

Mobile carts naturally experience wear and tear over time. Transporting them from event to event, setting them up, and using them season after season can lead to scratches, dents, worn paint, and other minor repairs.

Sometimes your cart doesn’t need to be replaced. It just needs a refresh.

Now Offering Maintenance Packages

Woodshop Joy maintenance packages include a fresh coat of paint and minor repairs to help restore your cart and keep it looking fresh for another season.

I love getting the opportunity to work on carts I built years ago and seeing how they’ve been part of my clients’ businesses and events.

Your cart may have left the shop, but it will always be part of the Woodshop Joy family.

If your cart could use a little TLC, send me a DM or visit my website to learn more about maintenance packages. I’d love to help get your cart looking fresh and ready for another season of sharing joy.

Could your cart use a little TLC?

“Laura, I Have a Crazy Idea”: Building Detroit Berry Company’s Screen Display Cart

· By Laura

I love the phone calls that start with, “Laura, I have a crazy idea. Can you do this?”

That’s exactly how my conversation with Gabrielle began.

She had a vision for Detroit Berry Company that was fresh, modern, and completely her own. She wanted to create a mobile cart that would really stand out in the Metro Detroit market, complete with a digital display screen, and she wanted the cart to reflect her innovative style and unique brand.

I knew right away this was going to be a fun one to build.

I’ve been designing and building custom carts for years, and Woodshop Joy was one of the first businesses in the Midwest to specialize in this type of custom mobile cart. This isn’t something I build on the side. This is all I build.

After years of building carts, I’ve learned that some of the best designs start with an idea that makes you stop and think, “How are we going to make that work?”

That experience gives me the freedom to be creative, think outside the box, and find ways to bring innovative ideas to life while still making sure the finished cart is functional and built to last.

Gabrielle brought the crazy idea. I was so excited to help bring it to life.

And I think we created something pretty special for Detroit Berry Company.

Have a crazy idea of your own? Those are my favorite kind.

I thought it would be fun to take a look back at everything that left the Woodshop Joy shop in August! This reel features all eight custom carts that went home with eight phenomenal clients, and I’m so proud of how each one turned out. Every cart was completely different, and it’s always so much fun seeing each client’s vision come to life.

Riley recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in videography and is now taking the exciting step of starting her own videography business. She has such an incredible eye for capturing the little details and telling a story through video, and I feel so lucky that I get to have her talent behind the camera here at Woodshop Joy. Watching her grow into her own creative career while getting to work together has been pretty special.
